Key Activities in Web Design.
Web design is the design process for a website including writing mark up for a client which encompasses many skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of a website. The various skills and disciplines contained in web design include web graphic design, interface design, user experience design, search engine optimization and authoring which include standardized code and proprietary software. It is a key requirement when doing web design to be conscious of the web usability which is the ease of use of a website. If the individual is also mandated with creating mark up, he/she should also be well updated to the web accessibility guidelines. Different web designers work together during web design covering the different aspects of web design although some can do it all together. Web design and web engineering are somehow related although web engineering is broader and focuses mostly on methodologies, techniques, and tools that form the foundation for web application development which support their design, development, evolution and evaluation.
Web design has many different processes during production and each process uses a different tool and technology which are updated on regular basis by newer standards and software. Creating of web formatted imagery and design prototypes uses two major graphics editor referred to as vector and raster graphics. Polygons are used in vector graphics to represent images in graphics which are later saved in any vector graphics format such as WMF and PDF. In raster graphics, dot matrix data structure representing a grid of pixels or points of color viewable on a monitor are used which can be saved in any bitmap or raster format such as JPEG and GIF. The W3C standards like HTML and CSS are some of the available technologies that can be used in web design. Creating a website during web design can either be done online by the online proprietary tools provided by web hosting companies which are intended for users to build their private site or it can be done by an offline software running on a computer creating pages and then these pages can be published on any host. Web design process also uses other tools to check on how the website is working such as the markup validators for checking validity and other testing tools for usability and accessibility to ensure all the guidelines for web accessibility have been met.
A web designer works hand in hand with a web developer in the web design process when creating a website. The major focus of a web designer is the visual aspects of a web page which includes the layout coloring and typography. Knowledge in the markup language for a web designer is key and it is a system involved in annotating a document in a way that it is syntactically distinguishable from a text such as the HTML and CSS.
